Beach Green - Public consultation at the next Have Your Say Day

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

UPDATE on 9th Feb 2016 - the green spaces and facilities workshop is now online for those who could not attend this event: http://bit.ly/sbnf-2016-2

A new cafe for Shoreham Beach green? Come and Have Your Say! From 12 o'clock on Saturday 6 Feb, you will be able to meet with a developer who hopes to build a cafe on Beach Green selling healthy food. The developer and architects are keen to hear your views on the development of the cafe and possible ways to enhance the surrounding area so that this can be incorporated where possible.  The developer will be accompanied by James Appleton - Head of Economic Growth at Adur and Worthing Council. Note that at this stage, the council has not granted permission to develop on any other part of the site other than the toilet block. This is your chance to have your say. What else would you like to see in the surrounding area?

Wilbo's Restaurants were awarded the status of preferred developer from the organisations which responded to the council's request for expressions of interest. In developing the council-owned 'toilet block site' - a process that was fully explained by James Appleton at the October 2015 Shoreham Beach Neighbourhood Forum 'Have Your Say Day.'

Their initial concept is the first stage in the evolution of a scheme for which they may eventually submit a planning application. A key issue appears to be that the cafe-restaurant/toilet may not be viable without some adjacent 'attractions' which will generate more footfall.

The document makes it clear that these are only initial proposals and the developer wishes to hear from local people what they think should be provided to meet local community needs.

We are now finalising the programme for Saturday, given these last minute developments - to include a workshop which will focus on this issue to start at about 12.00pm. The developers will present their ideas but will stress that they are there to listen to the local community. James Appleton (Head of Planning, Regeneration and Wellbeing at Worthing Borough Council) will be there to answer questions about the council's position. Mike Gibson - our planning consultant - will introduce and facilitate this workshop.
